Sweaty-toothed Madman via Todd Anderson (Dead Poets Society)
In a effort to get myself more in the mood to write, I’ve been watching some of those “inspiring” movies all over again. This is one of my favorite scenes from Dead Poets Society. Everytime I watch the movie, this scene just makes me smile from ear to ear.
I close my eyes and this image floats beside me
The sweaty-toothed madman with a stare that pounds my brain
His hands reach out and choke me
And all the time he’s mumbling
Mumbling truth, like a blanket that always leaves your feet cold.
You push it, stretch it, it will never be enough
Kick at it, beat it, it will never cover any of us.
From the moment we enter crying, to the moment we leave dying,
It will just cover your face as you wail and cry and scream.

I Wish I Knew How To Quit You
Believe it or not, Brokeback Mountain arrived in Birmingham last Friday to sell-out crowds. What was the biggest surprise to me… There were no holy-roller protestors standing out front. I figured some group would be there protesting the movie.
Rave Motion Pictures Vestavia is the exclusive theater for Birmingham. They screen four showing a day and I encourage anyone in the area to go see this movie. It truly is outstanding and breathtaking.
As of last night, Brokeback Mountain is on its way to clean up for awards season. Brokeback picked up three awards from the Critcis Choice Awards. Ang Lee won for Best Director, Michelle Williams for Best Supporting Acctress and Brokeback Mountain for Best Picture. Five of the last six winners of Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards has gone on to win the Oscar for Best Picture. The future looks bright for this film as well it should. No one can argue the “A” List status of Jake Gyllenhaal and the fact that finally, an “A” List actor chose to go gay for a major motion picture. Heath Ledger seemed to be almost down and out after several of his recent films but this will solidfy him as one of the new “A” List actors as far as I’m concerned.
I can’t say it enough… If this movie is playing anywhere near you, go see it. Make it a point to see this movie if you don’t see anything else all year long. This is one of those rare movies that comes along and just simply plays so well on the bigscreen because of the cinimatography and wide open panoramics. You can’t get the same feeling from your tv when it comes out on video. Go see this movie.

Brokeback Mountain
Brokeback Mountain is for me the most anticipated movie of the year (behind Rent of course but since Rent is pratically out, Brokeback Mountain moves to first now). I’ve just finished reading the (short) book. It’s all of 50 pages or so and reads very quickly. I would encourage anyone who is going to see the movie to first read the book. I don’t know how much of the book actually will make it into the movie so I think the old addage will apply, “The book is always better.” With that said, I don’t know if it will rain true this time. The movie will allow for a lot more visual imagery (which some will argue certainly doesn’t need to be in the movie) than the book does. Yes, you can read the book and picture it yourself. But I think this story will simple be better told through pictures. You’ll be able to see the developing love between Jack Twist and Ennis del Mar. My favorite line thus far from the trailer has been “I wish I knew how to quit you.” Upon reading the book, of course, you find the context behind the line and just how consumed Jack has become with the love for his friend.
I truly can not wait to see this movie and I encourage anyone who has a stereotype about homosexuality to put aware your preconceived notions for one night and see the film. I’ve heard the movie called the “gay cowboy movie”. I don’t think it will be that; I think it will truly ascend the gay stereotype and be a very touching story.
“Try this one,” said Jack, “and I’ll say it just one time. Tell you what, we could a had a good life together, a fuckin real good life. You wouldn’t do it, Ennis, so what we got now is Brokeback Mountain. Everything built on that. It’s all we got, boy, fuckin all, so I hope you know that if you don’t never know the rest. Count the damn few times we been together in twenty years. Measure the fuckin short leash you keep me on, then ask me about Mexico and then tell me you’ll kill me for needin it and not hardly never gettin it. You got no fuckin idea how bad it gets. I’m not you. I can’t make it on a couple a high-altitude fucks once or twice a year. You’re too much for me, Ennis, you son of a whoreson bitch. I wish I knew how to quit you.” - Excerpt from Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx

We’re not gonna pay… RENT!
Well I can’t say that I know people in high places but I can say that it pays off to be nosey sometimes. I e-mailed the local radio station WQEN 103.7 The Q yesterday inquiring about whether they knew of or were sponsoring any midnight viewings of Rent. They usually sponsor a midnight viewing of the bigger openings and I figured they were the best place to start after calling four local theaters all of which stated they would not be having a midnight screening.
Well, it turns out that it definitely paid off to e-mail The Q. I got a prompt reply back from Tommy Chuck (the afternoon personality) that asked for my name, address, numbers & DOB. He said I would have 4 tickets waiting for me at the station. Now that in itself is not the bid deal. The big deal is that it’s for a Tuesday evening Private Screening before the release on Wednesday. I’m very much a happy person now. Almost giddy I might say.
I can’t wait. I’m getting so excited about seeing Rent on the big screen finally. It’s been way too long to have to wait. After seeing it on stage 5 times (which certainly isn’t enough), it’s about time for the movie. And even better than just the movie being out is the fact that this will be my first time to see several of the people who originated thier roles in the original Broadway version.
I’m counting down the minutes....

Rocky Horror Time
It’s that time of year again. The never ending showings of Rocky Horror Picture Show. My roommate and I are planning a Hallloween Party/Rocky Horror show at the house. This should be great fun. We’re going to set up a projector out back and watch it on a white sheet with full participation. We’re preparing “Participation Bags” so all anyone has to do is show up with their adult beverage of choice.
If you’re a regular around here and would actually be interested in showing up, send me an e-mail. We’re planning the party from 8ish until on Saturday the 30th. We’ll have snacks, order some pizzas (welcome to contribute some for this) and punch. Bring you’re own beverage of choice and we’ll have coolers with ice.
Anyway, just wanted to pass along the interesting information. We’re looking to have a great time.

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
I’ve awaited this movie for a year now and finally it is upon us.
I braved the crowds and the weather to venture to a 12:01 am showing at the Rave Theater in Birmingham.
I was simply awed by the movie. It stood up to all expectations and then some. For someone who has never read the books in whole, I don’t have as thorough a knowledge of what parts were altered or left out so I think I enjoyed the trilogy a little more than some.
Now, I can’t wait for the DVD release of Return of the King. I’m sure there will be plenty of bonus features just as there has been on Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. On another note, I’m sure there will be some Trilogy special edition as well (which I’ll have to buy I’m sure).
5 Stars

Angels in America
The long awaited theatrical version of ”Angels in America” makes its premiere this week. I’ve heard so much about this play/movie. I was first introduced to it through ”The Laramie Project” (another great play).
I should figure out what I’m doing in order to watch it as I don’t have HBO myself. I’m noticed others with the same predicament as well.
I suspect this movie will cause a great stir among people once it premieres. As one journalist has noted (thanks to The Tin Man for the quote):
The buzz for Angels began months ago apparently. I’m behind on the times I guess. One comment I ran across from January noticed that Al Pacino was cast for the part. Others have already been lucky enough to view Angels and present their thoughts. And still others are just simply not sure what to think yet about the adaptation of Angels.
I’m definitely looking forward to viewing the movie version. I might wish to have seen the play first but I haven’t had the opportunity as of yet. Maybe one day.

Rocky Horror Picture Show
Well, we ventured down to the town of Mt. Laurel for a showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. We weren’t too sure what we were getting ourselves into however. It turns out that the showing was outdoors on a lawn area. By the time it was over, we were cold and wet. But overall, it was fun. We had a couple drinks at the The Bistro there in Mt. Laurel and then watched the show. I want to go back during the day sometime soon and see the town.

Another note for Matthew.
I can’t say enough about this play/movie. I have seen the live version of The Laramie Project as performed by Actor’s Express in Atlanta and have also seen HBO‘s version.
Both productions are absolutely wonderful. I think the live version is much more shocking in the way that it is performed on an empty stage with eight cast members. They simply change costumes in order to change characters. I highly recommend to anyone who has the opportunity to see The Laramie Project live, go see it. If you enjoy the theatre at all in any small way, go see this play.

Primal Fear
As I was switching through channels tonight, I came upon a movie I haven’t seen in a long while. Primal Fear was my first introduction with Edward Norton. Most of you know Edward Norton from movies such as Fight Club, American History X, Rounders and most recently, The Italian Job.
Back to Primal Fear however. I remember seeing this movie for the first time and thinking to myself how good of an actor Norton was. I’ll try not to spoil the movie for anyone who hasn’t seen it, but he plays such a versatile character in this movie. I can’t see just anyone pulling it off. He went on to play an even more amazing character in Fight Club.
This movie, however, has so many twist and turns so it seems. As soon as you think you have it figured out, you simply don’t. And the comes the ending.... Talk about a twist that you completely throw you for a 180.
If you haven’t seen Primal Fear, go see it. If you’re a big fan of Edward Norton, you should have allready seen this movie.
4 Stars
